When I first came across the Blog Swiss Miss I was blown away. I love everything about the blog. She also is the founder of creativemornings and tattly. One day I do want to travel to Switzerland. I want to experience the atmosphere, and to see the designs, museums and whatever else there would be to do there. But anyhow the speech Tina does is great one thing that shocked me was how the Swiss used helvetica on garbage bags. That could probably be because I’m used to them being a solid black or white.

Stefan Sagmeister: The power of time off
When I first learned about Stefan Sagmeister in School I had no idea who he was. Then I came across this video of him talking about taking a whole year off from work. There have been times when I felt overworked and exhausted creatively but I kept going. When I first experienced that I did not have an idea of what to do about it. So learning how valuable it is to take time off and to not experience a burnout was a great learning experience for me.
How to Believe in and appreciate your design work
When I first started learning about design I honestly had no clue what I was doing. I knew the technical side of things but I did not understand the thinking. Which started to frustrate me day after day. Attending art school you can start to become jealous of others who get praise for their work when you’ve spent hours upon hours on your work and receive little or no praise.
I learned from Debbie Millman to be prepared for what could happen if a client or someone does not like any of the work you’d do for them. Also to just shut up and listen to what they have to say regardless if you agree with them or not. Because people who hire us to do design they do not understand design. So always try to remember what it was like before you learned what you know about design.
This video will symbolize what every creative person will go through in their career. I went through a period of doing crappy work and I am still working to get better. I am working every single day to get better as a designer. I learned awhile ago of the formula “work 10,000 hours to become an expert”. So if you do a little designing everyday just think of how much better you’d be. It does not mean that you will have to sit at a computer screen it can be photography, sketching, video just something creative. But none of this will matter unless you want to become better then you are currently. So in order to appreciate your work remember that everyone starts out doing crappy work and they work everyday to get better. One thing I will continue to do is to keep my old design work to look back on and reflect to see how much I have improved.

Sh*t Graphic Designers Say
It’s not a font its a typeface. I will admit that I still get those confused at times but I learned a font is a family of letters and a typeface is how the font looks.
Milton Glaser’s Advice to Young Artists
I’ve been doing what Milton has suggested in regarding designing. Everyday I have at least been doing something related to design. But really remembering to not just be designing for the sake of designing.
These Apple Ad’s Suck Compared to the Older ones
I’m not really liking the direction these ads are heading in at all. They also feel like something that Steve Jobs would not have approved of. But Tim Cook does seem to be doing a great job at apple. Now back to the ads.
The storyline of these ads seems to miss the point in some ways. For example the mayday advertisement the guy talks about creating a video in iMovie when clearly the exporting time will depend on how long the video and its size and he closed the laptop when he was through? (I’m not sure how he would’ve finished exporting his video he made).
Mainly I feel the advertisements could be simplified more overall. I wonder if TBWA Chiat day still does advertisements for Apple.
If you look at the ratings on youtube you can see i’m not the only one who feels this way about these apple ads.
Michael Bierut Interview 2012
Michael Bierut is always a great designer to hear speak. I really like the advice he gives and the work he’s done as well at pentagram.
On Creativity – George Lois
I first learned about George Lois when I watched the documentary Art and Copy. George’s passion and how enthusiastic he is when he speaks about design really inspires me.

Wim Crouwel’s advice for young designers
Me being a young designer I still come back and watch this video. I first heard about wim crouwel when I watched the helvetica documentary. Being able to find my own way as a designer has been a journey and something I still am doing. I did not understand the whole process of finding your own way and style in design that symbolized me. Which has been going a lot better recently taking a financial break from college.
What is some good advice that you’ve received as a designer?
